I’ve only purchased 2 of these books this year, which are the 2 Jan Brett books and I snagged them from Costco last month) the rest were from a massive winter book haul I did last year. This time last year, we were just starting to really wrap our heads around homeschooling, we owned very few books and no seasonal books. It’s probably best that we don’t live an area that gets snow all winter long, or it would be an incredibly unproductive season for us over here.

I am so so looking forward to a full fledged snow day! Kids are in and out all day long, we skip our lessons, put movies on the big tv, bust out the board games and puzzles, and there’s a never ending pot of hot chocolate on the stove. We don’t get tons of it, but enough to give us a few days a year where the property is covered in a fluffy white blanket of awesome. Winter is my absolute favorite time of year, and now we live in a place where we get snow. Winter is here, essentially, in my mind, and I was so stoked to put our Fall/Thanksgiving books away and pull out all of our Winter/Christmas books this past weekend. We are going to take the lessons really slowly, we’ll only be focusing on one letter per week. There will be more things that I will make and some things I’ll try to buy as we move through these lessons, but these items will get us through the first 2 or 3 weeks.

We already had the little goat, so I just set him on the tray with the other items.

I made peg dolls of Katie and her family, Pete and I used an old shelf we had to make some mountains, snagged the Ostheimer spruce trees (score!), bought some fake jewels, and we also bought some walnuts and a mushroom nut cracker (we wont need that until later, but it’s just really fun to have). I read the first 3 lessons, made a few things, and bought a few things that would help us tell and retell the stories with props to really help it come alive for Doodle. I also thought that it would be fun to gather a few things and put them together for Doodle to help her get really excited for this time in her schooling. This seemed like a better fit for Doodle right now, while Live Education does present the letters and their sounds in story form, it’s a little more abstract and it seems like oftentimes, the parents were digging for an applicable fairy tale or making up a story themselves to go along with the letter. As they continue on their journey, Katie’s father tells her stories (Grimms Fairy Tales) that will prepare her for when she meets with the wise Sofia. As your child learns the letter sounds, they are following Katie, who is on a journey with her father and older brother to see the wise Sofia. I really love how Melisa and her husband have written them as a continual story.

I read through both and decided to start her out with the Waldorf Essentials curriculum for her lessons on the letters. We own both the Live Education grade 1 curriculum and the Waldorf Essentials grade 1 curriculum. Doodle has really been showing interest in learning to read and learning her letters, so I decided December would be the month that we started doing letter lessons. I have put off doing lessons that were geared towards her, until this point, I’ve really only had her sit and join Roo and I in lessons that were more aimed for Roo. Doodle is in a weird space right now, she asks everyday to “do school”, but is pretty disinterested when we actually sit down and read or talk about a story.
